Why Samson?

Samson is “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”  Part of the riddle is why did God with all His wisdom and foreknowledge put up with Samson’s shenanigans?  The answer to this question on one front will not be easy and on another it will totally understood.  It has to do with the sovereignty of God.  We don’t hear much about His sovereign will because most of us think ‘our will’ is sovereign.  By sovereign I mean it’s all that counts.  God’s will is the only will that really counts.  But we think our will counts.  We have opinions about everything and we are often quick (too quick?) to let everyone know it.  We are a nation that takes polls like it really matters what you think.  So I remind you, its O.K. to have an opinion, but understand your opinion and mine ain’t worth much.  Especially if your opinion goes independent of God’s sovereignty.

Samson, following his own will, became a fool forever, because He thought his own will was most important.  Proverbs 1:7 says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The easy answer to our question (why God would put up with Samson) is because of God‘s will.  It didn’t matter to God what Samson thought or did.  God’s will is all that matters and God did His thing in spite of Samson and his ‘out of control’ will.

The hard answer to the question has to do with you and me.  We understand Samson perhaps more than any other Bible character.  We can relate to his struggles and sins and out of control life.  We relate because we have been there to some degree.  God loved Samson in spite of Samson’s lack of spiritual awareness.  God loves you and me the same way.  It’s the way God operates.  The final analysis, we will be greatly encouraged by God’s putting up with Samson’s shenanigans; because He puts up with mine.  You know what? I love God all the more for it.
