When Johnny was …

Six, he heard his mother tell daddy’s boss that daddy was sick, but he wasn’t...

Eight, his daddy bragged that he cheated the government out of some tax      dollars…

Ten, his daddy got caught speeding and his daddy bribed the patrolman…

Twelve, his daddy rented some movies that weren’t very nice…

Fourteen, his daddy taught him how to cheat on the football field so the referees wouldn’t notice…

Sixteen, his daddy told him some funny stories about girls…

Eighteen, he got caught cheating on a college exam and was expelled … Johnny’s dad and everyone else wondered where Johnny learned stuff like that!  (Isn’t it kind of obvious?)

I do love Father’s Day and I love preaching on Father’s Day.  I looked over my last 5 years of Father’s Day messages…

2012 Fathers who understand the times and know what to do

2013 Smart dads and good dads

2014 Dysfunctional dads

2015 Dads who are Kings of their homes

2016 Bookends and Baseball (mom and dad Baseball was the rule book.  A strike is a strike are the bookends)

2017  Dads best friend is Jesus and the church and the truth.

I don’t know if that leads your thoughts in any direction or not, but I see that dad is quite important in God’s plan for any society.  The important role is often disparaged and made to look simple and unnecessary.  But with a little thought God made mom and dad, then God placed big importance on their role in the world, but more importantly on their influence over a child.

Did you hear about the three boys who were bragging about great their dads were?  The topic on this day was ’which dad is the fastest?’  The first boy said “my dad is so fast that he won first place in the 50 yard dash when he was in high school!”   The second boy said, “that’s nothing, my dad is so fast that you can shoot an arrow and my dad can run after it an catch it before it hits the target!”  The third boy not to be outdone said, ‘My dad is so fast, he works for the State of Illinois and he gets off work everyday at 4:OO PM, but he’s always home by 3:15 PM.  (Wow, that’s fast!)
