The Day My Mother beat-me-up!

I was probably 14 years old or so.  It was summertime and I was sitting at the kitchen table getting a cold drink of water.  As I remember it was a hot day.  My mother came in to the kitchen and began to tell me something I didn’t want to hear.  I really do not remember what her comments were, I just know I didn’t want to hear it, so I gave a big sigh and I rolled my eyes up into my forehead.  I don’t know if you ever did this to anyone or not, but I found out quickly either the sigh or the eye roll, or both, is not a way to win friends and influence people.  Before my eyes came down to the normal position, my mother hit me across the jaw and chin.  I don’t recall if she had a fist, a slap or something in-between.  I just know she shocked me with a sudden display of anger and violence.  Then she continued with her talk.  “Don’t you ever roll your eyes like that again!”  You see there was two things my mother would not tolerate from her kids.  They were sassing and disrespect.  We could get away with a lot (and we did) but not that.

I discovered quickly, you don’t want to get on that lady’s wrong side.  Since that eye opening day, I’ve discovered other people that it is not wise to get on the wrong side of.  Cops, teachers, high school principals, bosses and most important God.  All of the authorities in our lives can get pretty vicious when necessary.  So it’s just best don’t even go there.  Oh by the way, one more thing, I never rolled my eyes at my mother ever again.  In fact I just don’t roll my eyes at all.
