Simple is......

Simple original

The preacher’s heart was filled with warmth when he saw a love note on the pulpit next to his prepared sermon.  The note, from his wife had just one word on it; kiss.  How sweet, until he found out it was an acrostic for Keep It Simple Stupid!

Simple is usually better, and usually deeper and usually enough.  Especially when we talk about words.  Keep is simple! The fewer the words the better.  Fewer words are easier to understand and apply.  Martin Luther once said “the fewer the words the better the prayer.”  Simple is usually better.

Simple is usually deep too.  When stated simply, it means the writer has thought long and strong how to be concise and profound.  Think about one of America’s favorite speeches by one of America’s favorite presidents.  Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address.  Probably the most recited presidential utterance.  It is only 271 words.  Maybe modern day presidents could learn something here (preacher too huh)?

Simple is usually enough for most of us.  Enough to keep us busy, especially if you try to do what has been said.  Enough to keep us right.  Complicated is hard to follow so keeping it simple is enough for most of us.  Keeping it simple is enough to keep us satisfied too.  Think about if I spend more time obeying and doing what I’m supposed to do rather than trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do well, that is easier and better and much more satisfying.

One final thought.  Jesus was the best at fewer and simpler words.  He taught us a prayer.  Memorized by most of us and it is only 70 words in length.  He also taught us in a few simple words a way live the Christian life successfully.  He said “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  Well said Jesus, I love you all the more for your few meaningful words.
