Not much of a poem boy

I’ve never been much on poetry, but every once in a while, one catches my attention.  So it is with poem below.  Before you read it I want you to know that before the church had counsellors and family ministers, the preacher gave one bit of advice.  That’s all, one bit.  Before there were books on the subject of family care, there was this bit of information.  Ready?  The minister used to say, “The best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother!”  Having reminded you of that tidbit of information,  I think you will see why this poem makes the column today…

BEFORE THERE WAS YOU

Steve Chapman

Children, please give me your kind attention.

I have something to say, here’s my intentions.

I’m going to go out with your mother tonight,

And no, you can’t come; it won’t help if you cry.

Oh, you may wonder how I could be

So heartless to want just your mother and me.

Well, she’s your dear mother; I know that is true.

But she was my sweetheart before there was you.

First, we will walk by the ocean, and we’re going to hold hands.

We’ll write our names on the sand,

We’ll write “I love you’s” and send them off in a bottle,

Then in memory of you, we will eat at McDonald’s.

Oh by the way, your mother is still my sweetheart!
