Humor with a Point

I like humor. I think I always have. It still surprises me that some people don’t like it. How could anyone not like to laugh? I think I know and will tell you if you read all the way to the end. I will admit to you that not everything is funny to everyone. I will also admit that sometimes I laugh at things that I should not laugh at. I also know that some things that are funny are also evil and we as Christians should not participate in those vulgar attempts at humor.

I can also tell you that I’ve been in the most trouble in my life (in youth as well as an adult) for laughing when someone thought it was not an appropriate time to laugh. I remember a church member telling me to “wipe that smile off your face.” I know some people who think if you are really a Christian you won’t need to smile or laugh or think anything is funny. Where do we come up with all these different ways of looking at things?
O.K. I’m ready to give the answer. Why is it that some well-meaning people don’t like to laugh and even think that laughter is evil? They are deceived by the evil one. If the evil one can convince us that piety is being a sourpuss, that holiness is being serious always and that a frown is godlier than a smile, then the evil one has been successful. I believe that Gods’ people are the only ones who can smile legitimately. I also believe that more people are attracted by joy than sorrow. There is an old saying that applies very well… “you draw more flies with honey than with vinegar”. The point of humor is to draw people to the creator of everything, including humor.
