Chasing pearls or pop-beads?
If you had a choice between a strings pearls (the real valuable kind) or string of pop-beads, which would you choose? I suppose without much thought we’d take the real expensive pearls. Do you even remember pop-beads? They were like toys for little girls who like to pretend and dress up like littles princesses. They were pearl like, but not very much. They were trinkets you could pop together and make long necklaces, or bracelets or even earrings. Pop-beads are good for little girls, but big girls should out grow them eventually and even if they could never afford real expensive pearls they would upgrade their taste to more quality jewelry.
When Peter left the great catch of fish he left the equivalent of pop-beads for the pearl (Jesus) of great value. Peter received a calling from the pearl that has no equal.
There are callings of all kinds around us at all times. Callings based on talent, preferences, giftedness, education, money, entertainment and the list goes on. But there is but one calling of greatest value. That is the call to follow Jesus Christ. He is the pearl of great price, and he gave His all for what he considered a worthy pearl too. He sacrificed Himself for you and me and all mankind. He thinks you are a pearl. A pearl worthy of His attention. What would you be willing to do or give to obtain this pearl? Is it time to quit chasing pop-beads and go for the pearl of greatest value?
